Amber - A set of three tumbled amber gemstones. Stones will vary in size and shape, but most are in the range of 3/4" to 1 1/2". Amber is a fossilized resin from pine trees (pinus succinifera) that grew in northeastern Europe about 120-180 million years ago. It has been prized for its beauty throughout the ages. Although it can range from nearly white to blackish-brown, the most common colors are clear yellow to an orangish-red. Because of its organic nature, amber often has inclusion such as small bubbles and tiny bits of vegetation. In classical times, amber was once crushed and eaten with honey as a cure for headaches and toothaches. Amber beads were thought to protect the wearer from rheumatism, toothache, rickets, and jaundice. The Greeks called this stone elektron, meaning sun or golden. It can store a small electrical charge if rubbed against fabric. True amber is light enough to float in salt water.
